SPECIES OF MARINE MAMMALS REGISTERED IN ECUADORIAN WATERS
A total of 33 species of marine and aquatic mammals have been recorded in Ecuadorian waters. They belong to three Orders: Cetacea, Carnivora and Sirenia. Within the Order cetacea we have two suborders: Mysticeti (true baleen whales, with 6 species) and Odontoceti (dolphins, toothed whales and beaked whales, with 21 species grouped in 5 Families: Delphinidae, Iniidae, Kogiidae, Physeteriadae and Ziphiidae). The Order Carnivora is represented by two Families: Otariidae (sea lions and fur seals, with 3 species) and Mustelidae (otters, with 2 species). Finally, the order Sirenia is represented by the Family Trichechidae (manatees), with one single species. Below we will show both the scientific and the common names in Spanish (Sp) and English (In) of each one of the species recorded.
