Education

FEMM volunteers permanently conduct educational activities. These include: courses for biology students, training for whalewatching skippers and naturalist guides, lectures at universities and schools about cetaceans and their environment, sustainable use of resources, as well as educational lectures for tourists who participate in whalewatching tours . FEMM has also produced educational material for children , informative posters and whalewatching booklets.

In 2002, FEMM started in Salinas the educational program “Meet the whales of the Santa Elena Peninsula ”. The objective of this program is to give educational talks in public schools of this zone. During the talks, FEMM volunteers emphasize on the humpback whale, a species that is very popular in the country thanks to the whalewatching programs that FEMM researchers have helped to set up in different parts of the country. Thousands of students of Salinas and Anconcito have received these talks, and many of them have also participated in field trips for whalewatching from land and/or visited the FEMM whale museum in Salinas . We invite all the schools of the zone that wish to receive a visit by FEMM volunteers to submit a request, so we can include them in our schedule of visits. The visits take place every year between July and September.
